88% of FCT grantees are successful in obtaining a doctoral degree

FCT has published an international article in F1000Research – an open space for the publication of research articles, which is the result of a study carried out on the professional trajectories of individuals who have benefited from an FCT doctoral Studentship .
Entitled “Obtaining a Ph.D. in Portugal. Determinants of Success and Subsequent Career Paths“, the article was written by Ana Ramos and Daniel Ferreira (who are part of FCT’s Studies and Planning Division) and aims to disseminate the results of this study more widely, allowing researchers who are working on similar studies in other contexts to learn about the situation in Portugal. Published in the “Research on Research, Policy and Culture” section of F1000Research, the article also contributes to the growing body of evidence on doctoral training and the career paths of doctoral graduates at international level.
This study analyzed the career paths of 5,800 former doctoral students and concluded that 88% of these students successfully completed their course. This figure is high and comparable with that of other European Union countries. It was also found that the percentage of success was slightly higher among women and among younger scholarship holders at the start of the Studentship. Overall, 60% of former PhD studentship holders were located in R&D activities in the National Science and Technology System (SNCT). The professional situation varies markedly depending on the start date of the Studentship and the time elapsed after the degree.
The final version of the article, as well as all the interaction resulting from the review process, can be found at Obtaining a PhD in Portugal. Determinants of… | F1000Research.
