The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has opened applications for the Call for PhD Research Studentships in all Scientific Domains 2025, in the General Line and in a Non-Academic Environment. Applications close on April 16, 2025.

In total, 1,550 Studentships will be awarded, 100 more than in the previous Call , for a total investment of 133 million euros. Of this, 85.8 million euros will be allocated to the 1,000 Studentships to be awarded in the General Application Line and 47.2 million euros to the 550 Studentships to be awarded in the Non-Academic Application Line.

The 2025 edition presents a substantial change in relation to the future contracting and management of Studentships approved for funding, since these processes will no longer be centralized in the FCT and will be ensured by the institutions of the National Scientific System. This model follows the trends of similar European institutions and is similar to the existing Scientific Employment Calls This will allow for greater proximity between the institutions and their doctoral students, making interactions more fluid and strengthening their relationship with a view to mutual trust.

This will be the 4th edition of the Call for Doctoral Studentships with a line for Non-Academic Environment, which will continue to support doctoral studies in close collaboration with civil society entities such as companies, museums, hospitals, associations and non-governmental organizations.

The period for expressing interest remains open for non-academic organizations wishing to host doctoral candidates. The list of institutions can be consulted on the FCT website, which allows for more direct interaction with each institution’s point of contact, with a view to preparing a work plan aimed at a possible application.

Currently, more than 7,000 doctoral Studentships directly funded by the FCT are being carried out, of which around 1,500 are taking place in a non-academic environment. The non-academic line is complementary to other FCT funding instruments that encourage the strengthening of the Public Administration’s internal skills, such as Doctor AP, and in supporting the definition and implementation of its research strategies and priorities, involving different government areas.

The Doctoral Research Studentships are aimed at candidates who are enrolled, or who meet the necessary conditions for enrolment, in a study cycle leading to a doctoral degree and who wish to carry out research activities leading to that degree.
