L’Oréal Medals of Honor for Women in Science support four more researchers in Portugal

Loreal Medalists 2025

In its 21st edition, the L’Oréal Medals of Honor for Women in Science award distinguished four more Portuguese researchers. This initiative is the result of a partnership between L’Oréal Portugal and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which has already supported more than 70 women in Portugal.

The winners of the 2024 edition were: Ana Rita Lopes, from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon; Céline Gonçalves, from the Institute for Research in Life and Health Sciences (ICVS), University of Minho; Paola Alberte, from IST-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico; and Patrícia Henrique, from i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health – University of Porto.

The award-winning researchers’ projects were selected from several dozen applications. The selection was made by a scientific jury chaired by Alexandre Quintanilha, a retired full professor and physics researcher. Each researcher will receive an individual prize of 15,000 euros, in the form of a Studentship that will financially support their respective projects.

This edition recognized projects with a high social and scientific impact, which focus on concrete responses to challenges in the areas of health and marine sustainability. Find out more about the winning projects.

The L’Oréal Medals of Honour for Women in Science are part of the international L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program, which has inspired dozens of local initiatives in various countries aimed at young women researchers. The program supports the continuation of their scientific careers and contributes to raising awareness among decision-makers and society in general of science without gender barriers.
