ERC funds FRONTIERS project with Portuguese participation
The FRONTIERS project, candidate to the first Call of the Science Journalism Initiative and proposed by a consortium of four international partners, including Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, was selected for funding in the amount of 1.5 million euros by the European Research Council (ERC).
The FRONTIERS project will support stays of science journalists in research institutions all over Europe, between 2023 and 2027, for periods of 3 to 5 months. The consortium that will manage the project and promote these mobility actions includes, besides NOVA University of Lisbon, Pompeu Fabra University (Spain), the Centre for Ethics in Science and Science Journalism (Italy), and the company Enspire Science (Israel), which coordinates the project. The Portuguese mentors for this project are Ana Sanchez (ITQB NOVA) and António Granado (NOVA FCSH/ICNOVA).
The Science Journalism Initiative is a program created by the ERC to promote journalistic independence and coverage of cutting-edge research in all areas of knowledge. It will provide training on the journalistic coverage of science and promote mutual learning between journalists and researchers. The project should also fulfill the ambition of developing a sustainable collaborative model with a long-term vision.
In addition to the main goal of supporting independent science journalism, the ERC hopes that this funding program can contribute to public trust in science, to combat misinformation and improve social resilience against misinformation. R&D institutions, in all areas of knowledge, can participate in this program.
