INTERREG VA – Madeira-Azores-Canaries (MAC)
Main Objectives
The main objective of the INTERREG VA Madeira, Azores and Canary Islands (MAC) Cooperation Program is to promote cross-border and transnational cooperation between the Portuguese Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, the Spanish Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands and the neighboring third countries, Cape Verde, Senegal and Mauritania who were invited to join the cooperation area.
Strategically, there are five major axes or thematic objectives involved. Contributing to reinforce research, technological development and innovation (Axis 1) and to improve the competitiveness of SMEs (Axis 2), also includes actions to promote adaptation to climate change and risk prevention and management (axis 3), as well as conservation and protection of the environment and promotion of resource efficiency (axis 4). Finally, under axis 5, “Strengthening institutional capacity and efficiency in public administration”, the program promotes the recovery of new models of public administration organization that will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the public services provided, in order to achieve a greater integration.
Investment planned for the Program:
An additional EUR 7.5 million will be provided by the ERDF for technical assistance. The total volume of the program is over EUR 148 million, with a contribution from the Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of 126,506,503 €.
The following entities are eligible for aid under the program:
- The regional and local public administration and public and private law entities linked to them;
- Universities, research centers, technological institutes and foundations;
- Chambers of Commerce, business and professional associations and other socio-economic bodies;
- Other public or private non-profit entities with headquarters and competencies to work in the regions of the Azores, Madeira or the Canaries.
