1st edition of the new FCT-Tenure opens with 1000 vacancies for career positions

Applications are now open for the first edition of FCT-Tenure, FCT’s new funding instrument for stabilizing researchers in career positions, which will run every two years and has two editions already planned. The first edition of FCT-Tenure will co-finance the hiring of up to 1,000 PhD researchers, exclusively for permanent positions, with an additional 400 positions expected to be opened in the 2025 edition.

Eligible institutions are those in the National Science and Technology System (SNCT), which may submit applications to co-finance positions associated with new Calls career posts. It will then be up to the beneficiary institutions, through Calls and in accordance with the scientific and innovation strategy submitted for evaluation, to select and recruit doctoral graduates.

The program will allow both doctoral researchers to join the research career and the teaching career, assuming a limit of 4 hours per week of dedication to teaching in each of the careers for as long as the support is in place, and thus giving both careers a perspective through the scientific research activities they have in common.

With the aim of promoting synergies between FCT-Tenure and other sources of funding and with society, this Programme introduces two new models for stabilizing researchers, the “Research Unit / Associate Laboratory (UI/LA)” Chairs and the “Non-Academic (NA)” Chairs, with the aim of promoting co-funding and the sharing and alignment of strategies between national institutions.

FCT-Tenure is a central instrument in the professional stabilization of researchers and their lines of research, as well as in the creation of a more attractive and sustainable career horizon for researchers in early career cycles. Applications close at 17:00 on March 1, 2024 (mainland Portugal time).
