Yesterday, December 5, the FCT published the final results of the Call for the Award of Studentships for Doctoral Research in All Scientific Fields 2023. A total of 1488 new Studentships doctoral research grants were awarded : 1156 in the General Application Line (approval rate of 37.5%) and 332 in the Specific Application Line in a Non-Academic Environment (75.3% approval rate).

The investment associated with these Studentships is 115.3 M€ (89.5 M€ in the general application line and 25.8 M€ in Studentships in a non-academic environment), which corresponds to what was previously planned at the launch date of Call.

Analysis of the final results of the 2023 Call shows that, of the 1488 Studentships on Call, 56% will be awarded to women and 44% to men. In 81% of the Studentships awarded, the research will be carried out entirely in Portuguese institutions, 17% of the Studentships will be mixed (part in Portuguese institutions and part in foreign institutions) and 2% will be carried out entirely in foreign institutions. 76% of the selected candidates/applicants have Portuguese nationality and, in total, candidates/applicants from 57 countries are proposed for funding, with Brazilian, Iranian, Italian and Spanish nationalities standing out among the foreign candidates/applicants. The scientific area of Engineering Sciences and Technologies represents 24% of the applications proposed for funding, followed by Social Sciences (22%), Humanities (16%), Medical and Health Sciences (14%), Natural Sciences (10%), Exact Sciences (8%) and, finally, Agricultural Sciences (6%).

Around half of the new fellows in a non-academic environment plan to carry out research in companies and more than 10% of the work plans in a non-academic environment include research to be carried out in public administration bodies. In the 332 new Studentships research projects approved for funding under this line, there will also be research taking place in hospitals, museums, Technology and Innovation Centers, third sector entities and others.

For the first time, the evaluation process assumed an average panel member renewal rate of 80%, broadening and diversifying the universe of experts who collaborate with FCT in evaluation processes.

The final list of approved applications and the number of Studentships per panel can be consulted on the FCT pages for the General Application Line and the Specific Application Line in a Non-Academic Environment, in the Documents section of Call under the Results tab.
