The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has published on its website the list of provisional results of the second evaluation stage of the FCT Mobility program, referring to applications submitted between January 11 and March 10, 2025.

A total of 71 applications out of 75 eligible proposals were put forward for funding, corresponding to €486,654.50 in support for the international mobility of researchers. Of the 71 researchers in international mobility under this program, 18 come from countries outside Europe (Brazil, Canada, USA and Lebanon), but also from European countries (Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Romania, France and Ireland). In the outgoing mode, there are 53 Portuguese researchers in transit, mostly to European Union countries (Ireland, Italy, Iceland, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, France, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Croatia and Romania), and less than a third to countries outside Europe (USA, China, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Argentina, South Africa, Mexico and Angola).

Since its inception, this program has received 199 applications, of which 152 have been approved (76.38% approval rate), with total funding of €1,032,610.50.

The FCT Mobility Program funds medium and long-term stays for national doctoral researchers in foreign institutions and foreign doctoral researchers in national institutions, with a view to carrying out research activities and/or fieldwork.

The program, which has an allocation of five million euros in funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan – PRR(Measure RE-C06-i06 – Science Plus Capacity Building), supports two modalities:

  • FCT Mobility outgoing, which supports the stay of national researchers in foreign institutions for between 2 and 11 consecutive months;
  • FCT Mobility incoming, designed to welcome researchers affiliated with foreign institutions to Portugal for 1 to 3 consecutive months.

In the case of fathers and mothers of children up to 12 years old, the total period can be served non-consecutively, making it easier to balance work and family life.

The program is permanently open. Applications can be submitted until December 31, 2025, for mobilities starting until March 31, 2026. During this period, at least 185 mobilities are expected to be supported. The support granted includes an amount for travel and a monthly amount for accommodation, which varies according to the country of destination.

This program is an important contribution to promoting and strengthening the internationalization of the national scientific and technological system, which increasingly depends on its international attractiveness and its active participation in international collaborative networks.
