The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has published the Notice of the Call of the 2025 Call for PhD Research Studentships in all Scientific Fields, which foresees the award of a total of 1,550 Studentships. The deadline for submitting applications will run from March 17 to April 16, 2025.

The FCT Call for Doctoral Research Studentships is aimed at candidates enrolled, or who meet the necessary conditions to enroll, in a study cycle leading to a doctoral degree, and who wish to carry out research activities leading to that degree.

As in the last three editions, this Call has two lines of application: the General Line (which is expected to award 1,000 Studentships) for candidates who want to carry out their research in a mostly academic environment; and the Specific Line in a Non-Academic Environment (which is expected to award 550 Studentships – 100 more than in 2024) for candidates who want to conduct their research in a way that is closer to the business and social sector.

For the first time, FCT is proposing to award 1,550 Studentships, further reinforcing its commitment to research carried out in close involvement with non-academic organizations, which now account for more than 35% of all Studentships put out to Call.

The specific application line in Non-Academic Environment aims to strengthen the links between academia and the various social and economic agents through research. In this strand, work plans must take place partially in one or more non-academic entities, namely: companies; collaborative laboratories; technology and innovation centers and other interface centers; public administration entities or third sector entities such as museums, hospitals, associations in various areas (environment, culture, sport); and non-governmental organizations.

FCT is holding an open call for expressions of interest from non-academic organizations interested in hosting doctoral students. The list of registered entities is constantly being updated and is available for consultation by potential candidates for the Call Studentships.

The overall investment to fund the 1,550 Studentships to be awarded in this Call is 133 million euros: 85.8 million euros for the 1,000 Studentships to be awarded in the General application line and 47.2 million euros for the 550 Studentships to be awarded in the Non-Academic application line. Currently, there are more than 7,000 doctoral Studentships directly funded by the FCT, of which around 1,500 take place in a non-academic environment.

Last February, the application process for the 1st edition of the Call Doutor-AP was completed, with 467 applications submitted. This Call consists of an innovative line of funding to support doctoral students working in a public administration entity. Its aim is to value and train public administration professionals, representing an effective commitment to qualification in the public sector, by awarding support for protected time dedicated to research activities.
